Elizabeth Kelly, the veteran British actress best known for portraying the much-loved character Nellie Ellis in the BBC soap EastEnders, has died at the age of 104. Her passing, confirmed this week, marks the end of a remarkable life and a long acting career that spanned four decades and left a lasting impression on generations of television viewers.

Kelly’s death on 25 December 2025 was announced by her family in early February 2026. She is understood to have passed away peacefully of old age in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, surrounded by family. Her funeral service is scheduled to take place at St Peter’s Church in Scarborough later this month, followed by a private burial.

From Newcastle Beginnings to National Screens

Born Elizabeth Trower Kelly on 29 May 1921 in Newcastle upon Tyne, she embarked on her acting journey relatively late compared with many of her contemporaries. Kelly’s first credited screen role came in the early 1970s, with a small part in Coronation Street in 1971, when she was 50 years old. From there, she quickly established herself as a dependable character actor across British television.

Over the next two decades, Kelly built a varied résumé of performances in beloved dramas and soaps, including appearances in Grange Hill, Emmerdale, Heartbeat and The Bill. Her presence was also felt on the big screen with roles in films such as 24 Hour Party People.

    Becoming Nellie Ellis

Kelly’s most enduring role came with EastEnders, where she first appeared as Nellie Ellis, a sharp-tongued relative of Pauline Fowler, in 1993. Her character quickly became a fixture of Albert Square — a nosy, independent spirit whose interactions provided both comic relief and heartfelt moments against the backdrop of gentrification, changing family dynamics and the shifting landscape of soap storytelling.

Across 138 episodes between 1993 and 2000, Kelly’s portrayal of Nellie earned her recognition among viewers and peers alike. She briefly reprised the role in 2000 for a special storyline, reinforcing her place in the show’s history before stepping back from regular television work.

    A Career of Quiet Versatility

While many actors spend years chasing leading roles, Kelly’s career was defined by dependable versatility. She navigated genres and formats with ease, moving from episodic drama to soap, from period pieces to contemporary stories. Her ability to inhabit distinct personalities made her a familiar face in British homes for decades.

Her final screen appearance came in 2007 in the ITV series The Royal, after which she retired from acting and spent her later years close to family in Yorkshire.

    The Woman Behind the Roles

Kelly married and devoted much of her personal life to her family. She is survived by a son and daughter, along with several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Friends and community members described her as gracious, strong-willed and generous, a matriarch who balanced a busy television career with a deep commitment to family life.

Father Eddie Gubbins of St Peter’s Church, who knew Kelly in her later years, paid tribute to her character and spirit, recalling her gentle nature and gracious demeanour. He noted that Kelly maintained her sharp wit and engaging presence well into her final years, even as her health gradually declined.

    Legacy of a Centenarian Performer

Elizabeth Kelly’s death at 104 places her among a small group of performers whose careers not only spanned decades but also bridged generations of television audiences. Her contributions reflect an era of British television in which character actors brought depth, authenticity and humanity to everyday stories.

For many, Nellie Ellis remains a defining figure in the rich tapestry of EastEnders as well as a reminder of Kelly’s gift for capturing the subtle complexities of ordinary lives. As tributes continue to flow from fans and colleagues, her legacy as a warm, memorable presence on screen is assured.
