In a case that has drawn significant public attention, Linda De Sousa Abreu, a 30-year-old former prison officer at HMP Wandsworth in London, admitted to misconduct in a public office after being filmed engaging in sexual activity with an inmate. The incident, which occurred on June 27, 2024, was captured by another inmate and subsequently circulated on social media, leading to widespread scrutiny and legal action.

    Incident and Arrest

On the day of the incident, De Sousa Abreu entered the cell of inmate Linton Weirich, a convicted burglar, and engaged in sexual activity. The encounter, lasting nearly five minutes, was recorded by another prisoner using an illicit mobile phone. The footage quickly went viral, prompting an internal investigation by HMP Wandsworth staff. De Sousa Abreu was identified and arrested by the Metropolitan Police at Heathrow Airport as she attempted to board a flight to Madrid. Prior to her arrest, she had contacted the prison to inform them of her resignation and that her husband would return her equipment.

    Court Proceedings

On July 29, 2024, De Sousa Abreu appeared at Isleworth Crown Court, where she pleaded guilty to one count of misconduct in a public office. The prosecution argued that she had abused her position as a prison officer by engaging in a sexual act with an inmate, thereby breaching the public’s trust. Following her plea, she was granted conditional bail, with her passport retained by the police, and was scheduled for sentencing on November 7, 2024.

    Public Reaction and Media Coverage

The case attracted considerable media attention, not only due to the nature of the offense but also because of De Sousa Abreu’s subsequent behavior. In September 2024, she was filmed at a daytime club in Fulham, mocking her electronic ankle tag, which was part of her bail conditions. In the video, she is seen lifting her foot onto a table and describing the tag as “very demure,” a reference to a viral trend. This behavior drew criticism, with some accusing her of not taking her punishment seriously.

    Background and Personal Life

De Sousa Abreu, originally from Brazil, had been working as a prison officer at HMP Wandsworth prior to the incident. She holds a Portuguese passport and is a mother. Her lawyer described her as a “young mother” and “a person of good character” during court proceedings. Reports also indicate that she had an OnlyFans account, which inmates allegedly discovered, leading to coercion and blackmail. A friend claimed that prisoners had obtained her personal details and pressured her into the act.

    Implications for the Prison System

This case has raised concerns about the integrity and conduct of prison staff within the UK correctional system. The Crown Prosecution Service emphasized that such behavior constitutes a severe breach of public trust and that they will not hesitate to prosecute those who abuse their positions of power. The incident also highlights the challenges of maintaining professional boundaries and the potential vulnerabilities of prison staff to manipulation or coercion by inmates.
