England’s head coach, Steve Borthwick, has unveiled the squad set to face Ireland in the Six Nations opener at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium on February 1, 2025. This selection introduces new leadership and fresh talent, aiming to make a strong start in the championship.

    England rugby captain Maro Itoje

In a notable leadership change, Maro Itoje will captain England for the first time, becoming the 136th player to lead the national team since 1871. Itoje, known for his dynamic presence and leadership on the field, steps into this role with significant experience and respect from teammates and opponents alike.

Cadan Murley Set for Test Debut

Harlequins’ winger Cadan Murley is poised to make his Test debut, starting on the left wing. Murley’s impressive performances at the club level have earned him this opportunity to showcase his skills on the international stage.

Historic Selection of the Curry Twins

Twin brothers Tom and Ben Curry will start together in the back row for the first time at the Test level. Tom will occupy the blindside flanker position while Ben takes on the openside. Their combined athleticism and understanding are expected to bolster England’s defensive and offensive plays.

Strategic Choices in the Starting XV

The starting lineup reflects a blend of seasoned players and emerging talent:

Backs: Freddie Steward at fullback; Tommy Freeman and Cadan Murley on the wings; Ollie Lawrence and Henry Slade in the centers; Marcus Smith as fly-half; and Alex Mitchell as scrum-half.

Forwards: Ellis Genge (vice-captain) and Will Stuart as props; Luke Cowan-Dickie at hooker; Maro Itoje (captain) and George Martin in the second row; with Tom Curry, Ben Curry, and Ben Earl forming the back row.

The bench includes players like Theo Dan, Fin Baxter, Joe Heyes, Ollie Chessum, Chandler Cunningham-South, Tom Willis, Harry Randall, and Fin Smith, providing depth and versatility.

Anticipation for the Clash Against Ireland

England faces a formidable opponent in Ireland, the defending Six Nations champions. The match is set to kick off at 4:45 pm and will be broadcast live on ITV One from 4 pm.
