When travelers plan their European getaways, countries like Italy, France, and Spain are usually the most wanted destinations. While those places should be on your bucket list, you should also know that in Central Europe lies a gem that remains surprisingly underexplored by many: Hungary. With its rich history, beautiful architecture, delicious cuisine, and culture full of life, Hungary is arguably Europe’s best-kept travel secret.

Suppose you’re a history buff, foodie, nature lover, or someone looking for an affordable yet unforgettable vacation. In that case, this country should be your next travel destination—just find a car rental in Hungary and discover every hidden beauty this place offers.

    1. Budapest: The Number One Destination

Hungary’s capital, Budapest, is reason enough to visit the country. Here, you’ll find old-world charm but also youthful energy. The city is split by the Danube River, with Buda on the west bank and Pest on the east. Each side has its own unique vibe: Buda is hilly, residential, and historic, where you can visit the iconic Buda Castle and Fisherman’s Bastion, while Pest is flat, lively, and busy, with vibrant nightlife, bars, cafes, and cultural institutions. With so many things to see and do, many visitors return for more.

    2. Thermal Baths Everywhere You Go

Hungary sits on many geothermal springs, which make the country a must-visit destination for spa lovers. Budapest alone has over a dozen public thermal bath complexes; the experience is more than just relaxing—it’s cultural. Hungarians use these baths for pleasure, health, and socialization. Sitting in 38°C mineral-rich water while snow falls around you is a bucket-list experience you’ll never forget.

If you wish to stay away from the crowds, visit towns like Hévíz, home to the world’s second-largest thermal lake. Eger also offers charming spa experiences surrounded by nature.

    3. Rich History and Architecture

Hungary’s history goes back over a thousand years, and this is shown in its architectural diversity. Within the borders, you’ll find Roman ruins, medieval castles, Ottoman-era bathhouses, baroque palaces, and art nouveau buildings.

We already mentioned the town of Eger; when you’re done soaking in warm water, discover the well-preserved baroque old town and the historic castle that withstood a major Turkish siege in the 16th century. In Pécs, Roman tombs sit alongside Turkish mosques and Renaissance buildings. You’ll find storybook villages and beautiful manors in the countryside, while Budapest has Gothic churches, grand neo-Renaissance opera houses, and communist-era monuments—everything side by side.

    4. Food and Wine to Fall in Love With

Hungarian cuisine is hearty, flavorful, and comforting. Try signature dishes like goulash (a paprika-spiced stew), lángos (deep-fried dough with sour cream and cheese), and chimney cake (a sweet, spiraled pastry). And don’t even get us started on the wine. Hungary has 22 wine regions, each with distinct flavors and varieties. Tokaj, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is famous for its sweet Tokaji Aszú wine, and red wine lovers can explore Villány or Eger, where bold flavors are gaining international acclaim.

Visiting local markets, wine cellars, and family-run restaurants is one of the best ways to experience Hungarian hospitality and culinary excellence.

    5. Unspoiled Nature

There’s life beyond the cities, as Hungary’s landscape offers beautiful hills, peaceful lakes, and dense forests. The country is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts who prefer quieter, less-crowded destinations.

Lake Balaton, known as the “Hungarian Sea,” is Central Europe’s largest freshwater lake and a popular summer escape for locals and visitors. It’s ideal for swimming, sailing, or relaxing in charming lakeside towns like Tihany or Balatonfüred. Hikers will find well-marked trails and cave systems in the Bükk and Mátra mountains in the north, birdwatchers and nature lovers can head to Hortobágy National Park, part of the Great Hungarian Plain, where they’ll find traditional shepherd life, open landscapes, and rare bird species.

If you wish to stay flexible, find a car rental in Hungary to explore the whole country at your own pace. This way, you can easily access the country’s routes and hidden treasures.

    A Destination Worth Discovering

Hungary might not be the first country that comes to mind when planning a European adventure—but that’s what makes it so special. Here, you can experience the magic of old Europe without the crowds, the high prices, or the tourist traps. Hungary offers unforgettable experiences rivaling any more famous European destination—it’s time to start planning your trip!
