Video poker is one of the simplest and most popular casino games, making it easy to start. Yet, there are still some common mistakes you’ll want to avoid when you decide to give this game a try.

Thinking All Versions Are the Same

Video poker is a term that refers to a certain type of game, rather than a single, specific title. Any video poker game you play will be about trying to get the best possible poker hand. You don’t need to try and beat other players or the dealer, meaning that the only thing that matters is getting a flush, four of a kind or some other type of strong hand.

Versions including Deuces Wild and Jacks or Better can be seen when we look at video poker at Paddy Power Games. These titles are all based on the same idea but have different features like the 2s being wild or different winning hands being accepted. In some cases, you can play with multiple hands simultaneously or aim for a progressive jackpot win.

    Not Understanding the Rules

Now that you’ve seen how video poker covers a range of ways of playing, it becomes clear why checking the rules is important. This will only take a moment, as most online versions have a help page where you can read about the rules. You can also see the rules at How Stuff Works before placing your first bet.

    Not Checking the Paytable

The playing screen usually has a paytable at the side, showing what each winning combination is worth. Not checking this before playing means that you won’t know what hands are the most valuable, or whether relatively weak hands like two jacks get a payout. Looking at the paytable lets you quickly see what you need for a win and helps you decide which card to hold and which to replace. The list of poker hand rankings by Britannica is a good starting point for newcomers.

    Poor Bankroll Management

Once you start playing, you’re likely to win some hands and lose others, as the cards are dealt using a random number generator that ensures that they’re completely unpredictable. This makes it more important that you work out in advance how long you want to play for and how much money you want to gamble. You can gamble from small stakes of just a few tokens, so you can settle on an amount you’re comfortable with and that gives you the possibility of good wins.

    Not Making the Right Decisions

While the overall gameplay is random, this is one of the few casino games where you have to make a decision that affects your chances of winning. Once the initial five cards have been dealt, you’re given the chance to replace one or more of the cards. This is where the strategy element comes in. For example, you might want to hold onto a low pair rather than a single high card, as this can give you a better chance of getting a winning hand.

By understanding these common mistakes and how to avoid them, you can give yourself a better chance of winning at video poker while enjoying the fast gameplay.
