Wynne Evans is a Welsh opera singer famous for his portrayal of Gio Compario in the Go Compare advertisements, has recently expanded his repertoire by joining the 2024 lineup of “Strictly Come Dancing.” Beyond his television persona, Evans’s journey encompasses significant personal transformations, including a remarkable weight loss, a new romantic relationship, and a flourishing career.

    Early Life and Opera Career

He was born on January 27, 1972, in Carmarthen, Wales, Wynne Evans pursued his passion for music at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the National Opera Studio. His operatic career spans over two decades, featuring performances at prestigious venues such as the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Notably, Evans portrayed Ubaldo Piangi in the 25th-anniversary production of “The Phantom of the Opera” at the Royal Albert Hall.

    Television Fame and Go Compare

In 2009, Evans became a household name in the UK through his role as Gio Compario, the exuberant tenor in the Go Compare insurance adverts. The character’s distinctive mustache and operatic flair made the commercials memorable, significantly boosting the company’s brand recognition. Evans’s portrayal was so impactful that the mustaches used in the adverts reportedly cost £1,000 each to create.

Personal Life: Marriage, Divorce, and Children

Evans married violinist Tanwen Evans in 1999, and the couple has two children: a daughter, Ismay, and a son, Taliesin. After 16 years of marriage, they divorced in 2016. The separation profoundly affected Evans, leading to a period of severe depression. He has openly discussed the emotional challenges he faced during this time, describing it as “the worst depression” he had ever experienced.

Mental Health and Weight Loss Journey

Following his divorce, Evans’s mental health declined, and his weight increased to 24 stone (approximately 152 kilograms). Recognizing the need for change, he sought professional help and began a journey toward better health. Through a calorie-controlled diet, regular exercise, and long walks, Evans lost over seven stone (approximately 44 kilograms). He attributes his weight loss to consuming less than 2,000 calories daily, walking 10,000 steps, and drinking three liters of water each day. Evans has expressed pride in his transformation, noting that he feels more body-confident and energized.

    New Relationship and Support System

In 2024, Evans began dating events manager and fitness enthusiast Liz Brookes. Their relationship has been a source of support and motivation for Evans, particularly in maintaining his health and fitness regimen. Brookes has been seen supporting Evans in the audience during his “Strictly Come Dancing” performances, highlighting the strength of their partnership.

    Strictly Come Dancing Participation

Evans’s participation in the 2024 series of “Strictly Come Dancing” marks a new chapter in his career. Paired with professional dancer Katya Jones, he has embraced the challenge of learning various dance styles. Evans has expressed excitement about incorporating his love of opera into his routines and aims to make Wales proud through his performances.

Wynne Evans Net Worth and Career Achievements

Beyond his television and opera work, Evans has achieved financial success. His net worth is estimated to be around £10 million, bolstered by his long-running association with Go Compare and other ventures. In 2023, he won the eighteenth series of “Celebrity MasterChef,” showcasing his culinary skills and versatility as an entertainer.
